Every year we are looking for something special for our relatives. We want to make them a surprise and we think that it should be a piece of cake because we know what they like, and what they want. However when we have to make a final decision it turns out that we have a huge problem.
Exactly one year ago, I visited some of the Christmas Markets in France, and I want to show you that buying presents it is not just a task which we have to tick off our list before Christmas starts. It’s a great occasion to get back to our childhood to forget about our duties for tomorrow and also to sink into the fairy-tale atmosphere of Christmas. Comparing all Christmas Markets which I visited there was a special one, which had stuck in my memory. That is The Christmas Market of Riquewihr.
Riquewihr is a small commune in the north-eastern France. It is situated in the famous region of Alsace, and it is known of its historical architecture, and also of the Riesling wine. Riquewihir is officially one of the most beautiful villages in France. During Christmas time, this village turns into fairy-tale land.
In the village among the houses there are a lot of the smaller ones, made of wood. They are well decorated. They are illuminated, what makes that you feel as if you were in a fantasy land, with some imaginary creatures. In those houses you can find all a lt of artisanal objects, starting from kitchen equipment. You can buy there presents for you relatives, and also Christmas decoration for a Christmas tree and for your house.
I enjoyed the most the stands where the specialties of French cuisine were served, that is for example “Choucroute” – it is a type of Sauerkraut served with sausage, “Pain d’épices” – it is a sweet bread, which is really delicious and different types of cheese. What’s more you can find there a hot red wine which is definitely to taste when you are in the Christmas market in France. Next, there is a great atmosphere which brings you the good memories and you have impression that the time had stopped.
